Why Kite Dynamics?

Scalable

The potential of energy ships is virtually unlimited. Without space restrictions, we use the oceans as the largest available energy source.
Softwing / high-performance kites can be scaled almost infinitely in size and thus in performance.
Square meter = Energy

Flexible

Production routes and areas of application can be dynamically adapted to markets, climate, and wind conditions.
Kite Charge is designed for permanent adaptability.
Change = Adaptation

Ecological

CO₂-neutral energy and propulsion generation without fossil fuels.
The Kite Charger causes no emissions and no interference with marine ecosystems.
Movement = Nature

Independent

Energy production takes place outside national 200-mile economic zones (EEZ).
No geopolitical dependencies.
No man's land = Freedom

Profitable

The Kite Charger provides energy generation and transportation in a single process.
Green energy at minimal cost in every port worldwide.
Production = Transportation

TIMELINE

Our milestones

2017-2020
Project launch
The development of high-altitude wind technology begins in Stuttgart. During this phase, the concept, initial system architecture, and a prototype are created. Initial test flights confirm basic functionality. Scientific collaboration with the University of Stuttgart.
technology
2024
Company founded
With the founding of Kite Dynamics AG, technology development is being transferred to a corporate structure with a focus on energy generation from high-altitude winds and maritime applications.
2025
Water test – Proof of Concept
A key milestone is the first successful launch and operation of system version V1 on the water from a ship. The test confirms the technical feasibility and reliability of high-altitude wind utilization under maritime conditions.
2026
Test campaign Lisbon – first train trial
Further system tests will follow in Lisbon in an operational environment, including further train trials with larger kites. The results will be incorporated into the optimization of control, safety, and the overall system.

from 2026 Kite Drive Q1 – prototype for wind-based ship propulsion
Q1 marks the next stage in the development of the Kite Drive System. The prototype serves as a wind-assisted ship propulsion system and basis for scaling. Series development of kite surfaces up to 400 m² is currently underway. At the same time, Q2 is being prepared with pulling forces of up to 80 tons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does Kite Dynamics do?

Kite Dynamics develops scalable systems for harnessing high-altitude wind using high-performance kites. The technology is used for both wind-assisted ship propulsion (Kite Drive) and maritime energy generation with Kite Charge mobile. The focus is on mechanical engineering, AI-supported control, and maritime system integration.

What is high-altitude wind technology and why is it so relevant?

High-altitude winds are significantly more consistent and powerful than winds near the ground in many regions. Automated kites can be used to efficiently harness this potential to generate traction for ships or produce renewable energy at sea.

What is Kite Drive?

Kite Drive is a wind-based ship propulsion system (wind-assisted propulsion system) for commercial shipping. The system generates additional traction, reduces the load on the main propulsion system, and lowers fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

How does Kite Drive work technically?

Kite Drive consists of three central components:

  •  an automated kite deployment system for takeoff and landing
  • a flight control unit with sensors, safety logic, and four control lines
  • AI-supported optimization software for autopilot or fly-by-wire operation to maximize wind energy yield.
How far along is Kite Drive in development?

Kite Drive has been tested on land and at sea since 2020 and is currently in the advanced prototype stage. Sales are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

Is Kite Drive safe for maritime use?

The system is specially designed for maritime operations. It automatically detects and mitigates critical flight situations such as overload, calm winds, or emergencies. Product development is carried out with marine certification requirements in mind.

What is Kite Charge mobile?

Kite Charge mobile is a system for generating green energy from high-altitude winds at sea. Electricity is generated on energy-producing ships using kites and stored directly on board or converted into hydrogen or e-fuels.

How does Kite Charge mobile work in operation?

The ships follow meteorologically optimized routes in regions with constant high winds. A mission typically lasts two to three months and is designed for continuous energy production. The energy generated is then transferred at ports or offshore transfer points.

Why does Kite Charge Mobile achieve such high capacity factors?

By utilizing constant high-altitude winds, Kite Charge can achieve mobile capacity factors of around 80 to 85 percent. This puts the system well above typical stationary forms of energy generation.

For which target groups are Kite Drive and Kite Charge mobile intended?

Kite Drive is aimed at shipping companies and operators of commercial vessels. Kite Charge mobile is aimed at energy suppliers, industries with hydrogen requirements, island states, municipalities, and partners along the hydrogen and e-fuels value chain.

What distinguishes Kite Dynamics from other wind or energy technologies?

Kite Dynamics' systems are patent-protected and combine scalability, high energy yield, and mobility. Compared to offshore wind or photovoltaics, Kite Charge mobile enables flexible, location-independent energy production and direct delivery to ports worldwide.
